DSC_9919Our Learning Aims

The Science Faculty at Witton Park Academy strives to provide an innovative, engaging and challenging curriculum for all of our students in order for them to achieve their potential.

Teaching staff use a wide variety of teaching and learning strategies, including ICT, practical experimentation, theoretical teaching, and group discussion in lessons. Our students are given the opportunity to discuss and evaluate current issues in Science, and learn how scientific ideas contribute to technological advancement. We offer the highest standards of facilities, with seven brand new science teaching laboratories, high quality up to date resources and a safe and comfortable working environment.

The Science department strives to enthuse and encourage students in the wonders of science in order that they gain an appreciation and understanding of the impact of science in all aspects of their everyday life. This is further reinforced through our commitment to deliver substantial extracurricular opportunities for all students.

At Key Stage 3 our students study science for 3 hour lessons per week, through a two year accelerated KS3 programme.

Throughout the two years individual student progress is monitored and evaluated via formative mid-topic assessments and summative end of topic and end of year examinations. All of our students are placed in sets based on assessed ability. Any individual special educational needs are addressed and supported through a range of intervention strategies and we appreciate parental involvement in the support of all students.

At Witton Park Academy students begin studying towards their GCSEs in Year 9. At KS4 we offer a range of pathways that lead to specific science qualifications. Students, dependent on ability, can choose a course that will support them in their careers, and potentially, develop our scientists of the future.

Triple Science

The Triple Science qualification leads to 3 separate GCSEs using the AQA exam board. Students study Biology, Chemistry and Physics and are assessed separately leading to a GCSE in each. Students study Science for five hours per week over three years. Each subject, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, is taught by a subject specialist teacher to ensure the highest outcomes for our students.

Triple Science at Witton Park Academy is a practical based course, with students following an outline scheme of work leading to external examinations at the end of year 11. Each course requires students to take an internally based practical assessment – centre assessed unit, accounting for 25% of the overall grade achieved.
