The Broader Curriculum

Teachers work hard to facilitate first hand contact with the Arts and Arts professionals. In the past we have visited The Tate Modern Liverpool, Crosby beach to admire the Gormley statues and The Dukes Theatre in Lancaster. We have also been visited by an artist who led a 3D sculpture workshop for our Year 10 students and are currently working with an Artist in Residence. Their efforts are now on display in the school foyer.

Theatre trips are regularly organised to support pupils’ dramatic studies, most recently we visited the Lowry in Salford to see the Absurdist monologues Not I by Samuel Beckett. Pupils have also visited Manchester to watch concerts by the Halle choir and some pupils have taken part in The Big Sing.

We also have contact with Rock FM and have made many trips to work with radio DJ’s.

The Faculty is an exciting and dynamic place to work and we provide an extensive extra-curricular programme and are supported fully by the local music service, with a high proportion of pupils taking instrumental lessons. The faculty is very busy all year round. We provide a pupil and staff choir, DJ club, Ukulele band and Art and Media clubs. We stage two major shows a year, a whole school musical in the spring term and a music concert in June. In additional we often showcase GCSE drama and music performances to an invited audience and host an Art and Media exhibition in March.

Previous productions have included: James and the Giant Peach, Blood Brothers, Bugsy Malone and Bedazzled. Students from all years are encouraged to participate and we have had some pretty spectacular successes!

In 2015 we took part in the Schools Shakespeare Project, in which pupils performed Twelfth Night at the Thwaites Theatre in Blackburn.
