Autumn

An introduction to Media Studies

Development of Media Language

specific vocabulary, linked to key concepts of Audience & Representation.

Analysis of a variety of case studies/media texts: McDonalds, French Connection etc.

Specialist lecture from Spring Brand marketing.

Coursework (Assignment 1): Re-branding of existing product.

Spring

Development of Media Language: Analysis of shot types and storyboarding.

Development of practical skills – camerawork, photography video editing, lighting & sound design.

Coursework (Assignment 2): Cross curricular task with History and other EPA subjects

Students will analyse a variety of film makers and genres, linked to key concepts of Audience, Institution and Representation. Students will study: timeline of cinema, film movements and foreign cinema

Coursework (Assignment 3): Cross analysis of directing style / Representation of characters

Summer

Introduce GCSE assignment 1:

Develop understanding of Target audiences; skills specific to magazine.

Develop understanding of Key Concepts in relation to print media.

Coursework (GCSE Assignment 1): Cross-analysis of two magazines:
Analyse the front cover of two magazines.
How do the covers/pages engage the interest of their audience? (Assignment 1)

 

YEAR 11

Autumn

Introduction to Media Studies

Development of Media Language through specific vocabulary, linked to four key concepts.

Analysis of a variety of media texts: Magazines, Independent & Hollywood film trailers, music videos.

Opportunity to use the practical equipment- cameras and editing skills, which will be developed in Yr 11, term Autumn term.

Coursework (Assignment 1): Introduction section of Assessment 1

Spring

Develop understanding of Target audiences; skills specific to magazine texts.

Coursework (Assignment 1): Cross-analysis of two magazines: Analyse the front cover of two magazines. How do the covers/pages engage the interest of their audience? (Assignment 1) Build upon language (Autumn/Spring (i)), with vocab specific to the Music industry. Close analysis of Promotional campaigns (videos, adverts across a range of formats). Development of Key concepts (Institutions/Representation)

Coursework (Assignment 2): Promotion of music: Explore the way one artist is represented and promoted across two different media platforms- Audio Visual & Print.

Summer

Introduce Assignment 3- A trailer or opening sequence (approx 2 minutes) for a feature film (Horror genre).

Develop understanding of Key Concepts in relation to the Horror movie genre.

Coursework (Assignment 3): Begin research and planning file for the film. Develop understanding of the Horror genre – link research to their own plot/script/storyboards.

Development of practical skills:
• careful framing of shots
• editing appropriate to the nature of the production and audience
• evidence of consideration being given to lighting, mise-en-scene and sound.

Coursework (Assignment 3): Complete practical assignment (film in the Horror genre).
Evaluate on working practice, successes and areas that could be developed. Opportunity to develop c/w marks on assessments 1, 2 & 3.

Preparation for Unit 1 examination. Exam board will release brief and students be prepared for the specific area of Media.
